At WWDC 2025, Apple doubled down on its vision for Apple Intelligence by unveiling a major set of updates that expand its on device AI capabilities and make them more accessible to developers and everyday users alike. Among the most notable announcements were the launch of the Foundation Models framework, a powerful Live Translation feature, and enhancements to Visual Intelligence, Apple Watch workouts, and AI driven content creation tools.
Apple’s Foundation Models framework marks a turning point in how developers will integrate AI into the iOS ecosystem. For the first time, third party developers can now build apps that use Apple’s own AI models, which are hosted entirely on device. That means developers can craft intelligent features for their apps without sending user data to the cloud or paying API costs. This privacy centric approach also ensures that the performance is reliable even when the device is offline. The framework supports Apple’s native programming language Swift and includes tools like guided generation and tool calling, allowing for seamless app development with AI at the core.
One of the most impactful features announced was Live Translation. Integrated directly into the Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps, this feature allows users to communicate across languages effortlessly. It translates messages in real time, offering live captions on FaceTime calls and spoken translations during phone calls. The entire process happens locally on the device, ensuring conversations remain private and secure.
Apple’s Visual Intelligence also got a significant boost. The iPhone camera can now be paired with ChatGPT to understand what the user is looking at and answer contextual questions. Whether identifying a product, recognizing an event, or searching for similar visuals across platforms like Google and Etsy, this tool provides a far more interactive and intuitive experience. Users can even share screenshots and get AI powered insights without needing to exit the app.
On the Apple Watch, a new feature called Workout Buddy uses AI to create real time motivational coaching. Based on heart rate, pace, personal milestones, and workout history, the system generates spoken feedback that mirrors the energy and tone of Apple’s Fitness+ trainers. This voice based assistant helps users stay engaged and informed during workouts. Initially, it will be available in English for select workout types including cycling, running, walking, and strength training.
Genmoji and Image Playground were also refreshed. Users can now blend multiple emojis and customize them with text prompts, facial expressions, and other personal traits. The Image Playground now includes a “tap any style” function powered by ChatGPT, which allows users to describe what they want and receive visual creations tailored to that prompt. Consent is required before any data is shared with the AI service.
Apple is also enhancing the Shortcuts app with deep AI integration. Users can now create automated routines that include summarising text, generating visuals, or analysing lecture transcriptions. Both on device and cloud based private compute models work together to complete tasks. In one example, a student can use AI to compare a classroom lecture’s audio transcription with their notes and highlight anything they may have missed.
ChatGPT integration within Apple’s ecosystem is also expanding. Visual Intelligence can now directly ask questions to ChatGPT about real world items or digital content, making Apple’s AI more versatile and responsive. This seamless cooperation between native Apple Intelligence and OpenAI’s tools points toward a more connected and context aware future for iOS and macOS platforms.
Apple also confirmed that Apple Intelligence will roll out in eight more languages later this year, including Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional), and Vietnamese. While a full Siri revamp remains on the horizon for 2026, these new features show Apple’s commitment to building intelligent tools that are both powerful and privacy preserving.
